Hi Reader, A few years ago, my parents purchased their gravesites in a large cemetery in Ohio. They also had a tombstone designed and placed there with their names and dates of birth. When my parents took my sister and me to see their gravesites, I took a picture from a distance of the three of them standing there. It was probably the only time we'll all be alive together at that spot. My sister wiped a tear. On the tombstone, my parents had a simple engraving of two people walking, along with parts of Proverbs 3:5-6 which, in full, reads: "Trust in the Lord with all your heart. Lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight." (Or, as the King James Version says, "he shall direct thy paths.") In our journey of life, we often think about the struggles we have--pain and suffering; the challenges we face, the difficulties that seem not to stop. But how often do we pause and think about what is going well?
That's a question asked at the end of the "Michigan" devotion in From Sea to Shining Sea: 50 Daily Devotions from Traveling to Every State in America. The theme is Journeying, and it's based on my parents' walk across a five-mile long bridge in Michigan. Here they are at the end of that walk: One day in January, I recorded myself reading this devotion, sitting next to a cozy fireplace. I sent the recording to my Early Bird Reader Team (Thanks again, Early Bird Reader Team, for your support!). I'm sharing that video with you below. All in all, I was able to improve the audio, but the video quality is poor. I'll do better if I make more of these in the future.🙂 It's only about 4 minutes. Here it is: We're all on a journey, and, unlike that long bridge my parents walked across, our path in life is never a straight line. We might get off track and need to be redirected. Sometimes it might feel like we're walking uphill; other times downhill. That's life. May we ask God for wisdom and guidance as we continue on in our journey.
