Hi Reader, I'm slowly reading a book I started at the beginning of this year. And when I say slow, I mean slow - 1 page per day.
And some days I don't read it at all. It's not a novel or a book with a single topic. Rather, it's a book with passages from the New Testament and quotes from stoic philosophers. Each brief section of the book shows similarities between what the philosophers said and what the Bible says. The section I'm on now is about the words we say. While reading the book a few days ago, I came upon the verse below--from the Book of James in the Bible: I'm pasting it here using my favorite Bible translation: A person might think he is religious. But if he says things he should not say, then he is just fooling himself. His “religion” is worth nothing. (James 1:26, ICB) The book I'm reading uses the King James Version for the Bible passages. So I'm pasting this same verse now in that version. The words I bolded really stood out to me: If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man's religion is vain. (James 1:26, KJV) James writes about this again a couple chapters later (in James chapter 3), when he mentions bridling the whole body, as well as the bit that goes into a horse's mouth.🐴 Together, these passages remind us that a small bit and bridle can guide and control a whole horse. Side note: are you interested in working on memorizing Bible verses? If so, you might want to check out this free Bible verse memory challenge. So, the lesson for this weekend? Control the things you say. Or, better yet, ask and allow the Spirit of God to control the things you say. Pause and re-read the sentence above. James also writes, "A big forest fire can be started with only a little flame." (James 3:5b) Do you want to risk igniting a big forest fire with a spark from your tongue?
So, this weekend, I encourage you to think about your words before you might say them. 🧠 🙏 Listen to the small voice inside you that reminds you to practice self-restraint. Hi Reader, I love our dog, Kuzu, and she loves me. But... She loves my wife more. I give Kuzu more treats than my wife does. But, in comparison, I'm boring. When she's with me at a cafe, she lays down patiently--for hours--waiting for me to finish my work on my laptop. (I do give her a lot of attention as she calmly waits.) Another good name for her would be Patience (April 2026). She has so much patience. Here's something kind of funny... Kuzu has learned that, when my wife calls me on the...
Hi Reader, A few years ago, my parents purchased their gravesites in a large cemetery in Ohio. They also had a tombstone designed and placed there with their names and dates of birth. When my parents took my sister and me to see their gravesites, I took a picture from a distance of the three of them standing there. It was probably the only time we'll all be alive together at that spot. My sister wiped a tear. On the tombstone, my parents had a simple engraving of two people walking, along...
Hi Reader, Do you find it difficult to remember God's presence and love for you during tough times, or when you're upset? Here's a brief devotion that may help, from the new book I wrote with my parents, From Sea to Shining Sea: 50 Daily Devotions from Traveling to Every State in America. Each devotion in the book relates to a state in the United States. The one below is about Kentucky... It includes a prayer point at the end: for the release of any negative feelings that may have a hold on...
